About
Island Peace and Justice was founded in 1989. Our mission is to bring awareness to the Deer Isle, Maine population of the increasing injustice in our society and the horrendous militarization of U.S. policy.
What we Believe:
We believe that Peace is the ground on which the well-being of humanity can grow, and that peace becomes possible through justice that flows from the recognition of the worth, dignity and human rights of each and every person on earth.
What we Do:
We stand vigil across from the Deer Isle Stonington High School (DISHS) every Monday from 4:00-4:30 p.m. (regardless of the weather). All are welcome to join us.
We host films, speakers and events on peace and justice issues.
We distribute literature on peace, social and economic issues at the Stonington Farmers Market.
We write press releases and letters-to-the-editor.
We pressure our Congressmen and Senators.
We donate to Island Food Pantry and Island Heating Assistance.
We sponsor weekly informational notices in the Island Ad-Vantages.
We march as a group in the annual Fourth of July Parade under our own banner.
We hold a vigil on August 6 to remember Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
We support environmental quality and energy sustainability initiatives.
We support other peace and justice groups such as Peninsula Peace and Justice and Veterans for Peace by publicizing and attending promoted events.
We encourage all people to treat all people with respect and with justice.
Monday Peace Vigils 4-4:30 p.m. All welcome.
