JULIAN ASSANGE: FREE AT LAST

Julian Assange, founder of WikiLeaks, has been released from US harassment and imprisonment by the US’s pliant ally Britain and is back home in Australia.

Why was the US so anxious to shut down Assange and WikiLeaks? In the words of Reuters, “The most controversial leaks by WikiLeaks featured classified US military documents and videos from the war it waged in Iraq and Afghanistan in the early to mid 2000s that it said highlighted issues such as abuse of prisoners in US custody, human rights violations, and civilian deaths.” We should feel grateful to Assange for showing the gruesome results of US interventions around the world.

Assange was following the example of Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers on the Vietnam War, speaking truth to power. US officialdom may be unhappy, but we are better off knowing the truth.
