Cellphones in Schools
CELLPHONES IN SCHOOLS
There is a crisis facing many middle and high schools in the US. Cellphones have caused fights among students and competition among students over who can produce the best videos of the fights. New York Times reporters reviewed more than 400 of these fight videos from all over the US. The stimulus for the fights was often video shaming and cyber bullying. The fights have resulted in student deaths by violence and suicide and, of course, loss of learning. Who is to blame? Technology, websites, “influencers”, TV newscasts, the culture in general? What should school policies be regarding cellphone possession and use while students are in attendance?
