Iran Nuclear Deal Revival
IRAN NUCLEAR DEAL REVIVAL
According to a recent report, the US and Iran are close to reviving the nuclear deal negotiated by the Obama administration in 2015 and cancelled by Trump in 2018. The deal involved placing limits on Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of some sanctions.
Arguments for reviving the deal are that it would keep Iran from producing a nuclear weapon, it would allow Iran to produce more oil for the world market thus reducing energy prices, and it would blunt the tendency in Iran to align with Russia and China. Arguments against the revival of the agreement are that it is not a strong enough barrier against an Iranian nuclear weapon and that it would endanger Israeli security. A big fight is looming in Congress. As a step toward peace, we should support the revival of the 2015 agreement.
