Medicated Abortions in Danger

MEDICATED ABORTIONS IN DANGER

54% of abortions in the US are carried out by medication: specifically, two drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol. Mifepristone detaches the fertilized egg from the uterine wall; misoprostol empties the uterus by causing contractions. A Texas lawsuit by anti-abortion advocates seeks to ban mifepristone.

Abortion by medication is less invasive and cheaper than surgical abortion and is especially effective for first-trimester abortions. And the medication is available to women by mail or cross-border transport in states where abortion is illegal.

Why are women compelled to continue an unwanted pregnancy in some states? Why are we forcing women in benighted states to scramble for abortions? Why are religious zealots allowed to have so much influence in the US?
